11/04/17: HMRC’s Statistics relating to Alcohol Wholesaler Registration Scheme (‘AWRS’) Applications and Refusals

M&R Tax Advisers have obtained statistics from HMRC with regard to the number of applications for AWRS approval received by HMRC and the number of applications refused. Between 1st January 2016 and 31st March 2016 – the ‘existing trader’ window – HMRC received 4,866 applications for AWRS approval from existing alcohol wholesale traders. By early April 2017, all of these applications had been processed, leading to 422 refusals. As of 31st March 2017, HMRC had received 7,431 AWRS applications in total, of which 7,280 had been processed by early April 2017. Of the processed applications, 5,998 had been approved (either outright or with conditions imposed); 534 had been refused; and 748 had been withdrawn by the applicants. Of the 534 refusals, 422 were those to existing traders.
